Guided Rock Climbing at Pilot Mountain

Pilot Mountain rises like an island out of the Piedmont — visible from miles away and home to some of the most accessible, well-bolted climbing in central North Carolina. For climbers in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, the Triad, and beyond, it's the closest real outdoor rock and one of the friendliest crags in the state for first-time outdoor climbers.

About Climbing at Pilot Mountain

Pilot Mountain State Park sits 30 minutes north of Winston-Salem. The climbing is on quartzite cliffs — the smaller cliff band beside the distinctive knob that make the mountain so recognizable. Routes are mostly bolted sport climbs from 5.5 to 5.12+, with a heavy concentration of moderates in the 5.6–5.9 range that are ideal for top-roping with new climbers.

The crag faces South, but you can chase shade or sun depending on the season. Access is regulated by the state park — guided climbing keeps you on the right side of the rules and on the best routes.
