Rumbling Bald — Lake Lure, NC
Guided Climbing & Bouldering at Rumbling Bald
Rumbling Bald is the most beginner-friendly major crag in western North Carolina — and one of the only places in the Southeast with both world-class bouldering and great sport climbing in the same spot. It's our go-to for first-time outdoor climbers, families, and anyone visiting Asheville who wants to climb real rock without an epic approach.
About Climbing at Rumbling Bald
Rumbling Bald sits in Chimney Rock State Park above Lake Lure, about an hour from Asheville. The cliff is gneiss/granite and splits into two distinct climbing areas:
- The Boulder Field is one of the premier bouldering destinations in the Southeast, boasting hundreds of established problems from V0 to V13 scattered across a massive talus field.
- The Rope Climbing Area offers a world-class variety of vertical terrain ranging from 5.5 to 5.13, featuring a distinct mix of technical face climbing, classic crack systems, and well-bolted sport climbs.
The approach is short, the rock quality is excellent, and the south-facing walls mean climbing here is good in conditions that shut down other crags.
